Research continued

To pick my second game to study, I decided to do some research into the most popular horror games. One that came up quite a bit was 'System Shock 2'. This is quite an old game, created in 1999 which is a first person shooter, made for the PC. (http://irrationalgames.com/projects/system-shock-2/)

"System Shock 2 is the sequel to Looking Glass Studios / Origin System 1994 PC and Macintosh title, System Shock. Like System Shock 1, there will be persistent levels (i.e., drop an item on one level, and you could go back later to retrieve it), game play elements like logs, inventory, skills, persistent world, leaning, hacking, rpg elements, multiple weapons and enemies, and a compelling storyline. Unlike most other first person shooters, the purpose of System Shock was not to kill everything in sight; nor was it a "find the key to move onto the next level" game." (http://www.sshock2.com/datanode/gen.htm)

From studying the plot of the game and the introduction scene, it is clear to me that this game maybe has no clear influences from other games, but I can see that newer games may have been influenced by System shock 2. My first thought was Portal, with the rogue VI and the introduction is similar to the Portal trailers.

The two trailers have the same lighthearted feel to them, and also have the same corporate broadcast look. The also use the same science theme, with the use of the instructional character.
